Things to Do in Grassy Creek, NC

Grassy Creek has often been called the “jewel” of Ashe County, because of its gorgeous valley and unspoiled pastoral landscape. Just like every area of our beautiful county, Grassy Creek has a lot to offer, but it can be difficult to find information about Grassy Creek specifically.  We've compiled a list of things to do that are within Grassy Creek or in the immediate area.

The Old Store at Grassy Creek

Step back in time at The Old Store, the newest historic store in Ashe County. The Old Store is within walking distance of Carolina Pines. It features local foods, crafts, gifts, u-pick blueberries, a Christmas tree education center, and a large deck to sit a spell and enjoy the landscape. You can get tasty treats, fresh baked goods, hot dogs and premade sandwiches. There is also a selection of frozen meals and household items.

Grayson Highlands State Park

Grayson Highlands State Park is located in neighboring Mouth of Wilson, Virginia.  It is 30 minutes away via main roads and 15 minutes away via backroads. 

Near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Virginia's two highest mountains, Grayson Highlands offers scenic views of alpine-like peaks more than 5,000 feet high. Facilities include a visitor center, campgrounds, and hiking trails leading to waterfalls, overlooks, and the famous wild ponies!  Scenic horse trails and a horse camping area with electric and water hookups, stables and parking for trailers are available. The park provides year-round access to the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail.

New River State Park

The New River State Park U.S. 221 access and Visitor Center is a 20 minute drive away.  The U.S. 221 access offers hiking trails, picnic shelters, RV or tent camping, and paddling access. A visitor center with an exhibit hall complements interpretive programs on the river’s history and ecology. The picnic shelters, as well as a community building, can be rented for family or group gatherings.

Riverside Canoe and Tube Rentals

Riverside Canoe and Tube Rentals offers canoe, kayak, tube, and cabin rentals. Their self guided New River paddling trips range from 5 miles to 11 miles, or overnight. Riverside Canoe is located 6 miles (15 minutes) from our store.
